a night you could shimmy-shay your way to the street vender cart and
demand for some bacon wrapped hot dogs. and put as much mustard and
mayo as you wanted. and try to avoid the flying condiments from landing
on your shoe.
a night where the cocktails were mostly alcohol with a splash of
something non-alcoholic for plausible deniability. then drinking
straight from the bottle when deniability got beaten down with an empty
bottle of ketal one.
stumbling through the corridor, feeling the vibe of your friends around
you, then stepping into a place where the bass was so loud it pulsates
so internal organs hummed by themselves. where the dance floor felt
like an ex-lover pissed at you for all the things you did wrong, but
still willing to look the other way when it came down to it. and just
as raw and fun.
a night where the discussion of standing still was ripped completely
off the table, put into a cardboard box, and donated to a garage sale
benefiting "suck". replaced in its place was a shiny metal pole and
some wrinkled dollar bills. and all that was left was the movement of
shoes, of bodies, of bouncing people.
puking or heaving on driveways, in toilets, with a joker smile and
maniac laughter. secrets told, feelings revealed, smiles shared,
concerns distributed.
lighting up, all you want, all you can, in the back alleys, walking and
talking to random actors and strangers and seeing where it could all
go. mostly it went puff puff into the air and into your soul.
a night you could pick up and lick and call her "maimi". and laugh
about drunken texts, conversations, the phone calls, and the late night
impromptu food.
a night where the company of the people was the best part of it all.
Time... 55 minutes 6.2 miles. It was actually 57 minutes but it took 2 minutes to get to the starting line there were so many people. My first 10k where it was mostly flat, and I took full advantage of that. Didn't slow down at all until mile 5.2 or so.. and only because there was a pretty girl in front of me.
there was a bunch of mini-stages next to the course where different countries would perform, kind of like some sleek "it's a small world" kinda deal... nike-fied.... Mexico has mariachi musicians.. brazil had pretty woman dancing in traditional garb, china had a dragon performance (the one with the people in the dragon), and los angeles had a dance circle. yeah.. a dance circle with some loud hip-hop. some girl was doing some locking. since that guy Randy from American Idol and america's best dance crew was there i'm guessing the kaba modern kids (or maybe some new crew) might have been there. i don't watch tv much so i wouldn't know.
Next goal: below 49.6 minutes. Which would be an 8 minute mile all the way through.
Concert by Kanye West and Common right after.. Good performances. Live music. Fireworks, all the rest of that stuff. Everything was very slick.. except for the bag check, which was totally messed up. but it's definitely worth the 35 you pay when most races are so much more.
There was tons of schwag... I got breakfast for the next week. A few powerbars, some granola treats.. You get this useless wrist band thing for completing the race.
The t-shirt they gave to everyone was nice... Dry-fit material.
Wore a headband.. grossed my friend Yeeshing out after the race and twisting it such that i think more than a few shots of davidoh sweat puddled on the floor. she was like.. ewwwwwwwwwww. after i realized my hands were soaked with a mixture of sweat and city air, I started feeling the same way.
Since I haven't really exercised much (but did quit smoking... for the most part) in the last 2 months, i consider this a great stepping stone on my way to the half-marathon i signed up for in December and the marathon i plan to run in 2009.
Fuck, my hamstrings just cramped up hardcore. Sucks. i need alcohol.
As some of you may know, I own Glowsticking.com, and have been running it for over 8 years now (I started it when I was a sophomore in college).
It has grown remarkably over the years, and for the 2008 summer, we have released a new video advertisement. The last one was made over 6 years ago (and still served us quite well), and we decided to update it with newer videos and moves and to highlight our international community of people.
